Help us make Aotearoa a place where talent wants to live.
Find incredible junior talent to grow in your organisation.
Investing in juniors is crucial to a thriving and future-proof tech sector. Creating opportunities for juniors now means that Aotearoa will have a strong pipeline of home-grown talent moving up in the industry over the next 10 years.
Interns & graduates are a cost effective way to bring fresh energy and ideas into your teams, challenge the status quo, and deliver project work. Summer of Tech employers regularly tell us that their interns are delivering value (and getting in front of customers) before the end of summer!
We’ve got the talent, the team, the platform and the events employers need to hire top junior talent with ease. Join us today.

If you’re hiring interns to help your business accelerate R&D projects, then Callaghan Innovation R&D Experience Grants are worth checking out.
The R&D Experience Grants fund innovative businesses to employ tertiary-level students (NZQA levels 6-10) as full-time interns over their summer break. If your grant is approved, you will receive a reimbursement for 400 hours of full-time work at NZ Living Wage upon proof of payment to the student.

The tools to do the job
Platform
The Summer of Tech platform is custom built to streamline your recruitment process. List a role and specify the skills you’re looking for. Then you can wait for candidates to apply before screening, or you can proactively search our candidate pool based on your specific requirements.
Bookmark, prospect, disqualify and make offers with ease. Our customisable prospect funnel makes it easy for you to track and move applicants through the stages of your recruitment.
You can also add notes to candidate profiles, so your team can record impressions during interviews or events.
Candidates
Summer of Tech candidates come from tertiaries all across Aotearoa, both traditional University degrees, and polytech or bootcamp courses. All Summer of Tech candidates will either be studying or within 12 months of graduating.
They have a huge range of skills - from development, data and cyber through to sales, marketing, design & engineering. You can see our live candidate breakdown here!
Candidate profiles are set up to give you all the information you need - contact details, CV, academic record, GitHub or portfolio, visa, skills and an About Me section that will tell you what makes the candidate tick.
Through our programme, candidates have access to up to 100 free events each year to help prepare them for industry. Supported by our industry volunteers and sponsors, we run bootcamps, workshops, career panels, CV review sessions, mock interviews, mentor groups and 1:1 sessions.
Our free industry-led bootcamps on technical and core skills help candidates develop personally and professionally. These events give them practical experience opportunities and a taste of real world work and are the key ingredients that make Summer of Tech the best place to find your junior talent.
Employers regularly tell us that Summer of Tech candidates are the best of the best.
Recruitment events
Summer of Tech runs a series of events during September, giving employers and candidates the chance to connect in a buzzing environment (Meet & Greet) and saving employers time scheduling follow up interviews (Speed Interviews).
These events are mostly geared towards summer intern recruitment, but our graduate employers are welcome, too!
Meet & Greet: Our version of a career fair event where you can network with candidates casually before you progress to the interview stage.
Speed Interviews: Invite your top candidates to attend a series of quick-fire interviews, so you can get to know each other better. We take care of the scheduling, so you don’t have to.
2025 Pricing
We’re a not-for-profit, and our fees go back into helping students and graduates get industry-ready. We have an annual registration fee, and placement fees depending on the size of your organisation and the type of contract.
Please note the above prices are per placement and are GST-exclusive.
Start-up? Not-for-profit?
If our fees are beyond your budget but you’re committed to fair pay for your new talent, please contact us to discuss.
FAQs
-
Meaningful work
Their role could be joining an existing team as an entry-level team member, part of a new team of interns working on a new or existing project, or working on an individual project. There’s no restrictions, except we ask that you give them appropriate work to their skill level and career aspirations.
A technical mentor
Students & graduates will need a go-to person to answer technical questions. If you don’t have in-house technical capacity, then Summer of Tech might not be suitable for your organisation. A student or graduate as the sole Tech person in an organisation does not work out well!
Support with on-the-job learning
Summer of Tech roles are entry-level, usually a student or graduate’s first industry job. Their studies have usually left gaps in their knowledge, so we ask you to expect and support a steep learning curve in their first weeks.
Tools for the job
Students & grads need to sit with their mentor or team as much as possible. We ask that you provide all the necessary tools for them to do their job. Just like a normal employee.
If your whole team works remotely, remember that interns will need an appropriate level of support to adjust to this. This may be their first professional job, please be mindful and proactive in supporting them to feel part of the team.
A fair wage
Summer of Tech is a paid work experience programme. We support a Living Wage. Tech is a highly skilled industry, candidates have loans and other commitments, and SoT is all about welcoming and valuing newbies into the Tech industry. For more background on why you should pay your interns and graduates, check out this blog post.
-
Yes! Summer of Tech candidates include final year & graduate students (you can search on this criteria). Many internships roll into full-time, permanent roles.
Graduates are eligible for Summer of Tech, as long as they graduated less than 12 months ago.
-
Yes. As long as they’re studying at a NZ tertiary institution, and have a valid work visa for the summer. You cannot search on visa status, but if there are legal residency restrictions for your roles, please contact us to discuss.

This is the equivalent of your “Careers” section on your website. We suggest you include information about your business, what you do, how the tech team contributes, your work environment, and anything else you think is relevant for students and graduates who probably haven’t thought about your organisation as a potential employer before.
You can include links to your organisation’s online accounts, and an optional short video. We highly recommend you make a short video aimed at students and graduates – just a DIY office tour on a mobile phone camera is fine! This is a great way to let students and graduates get a feel for your organisation and what opportunities you’re offering to interns and graduates.
This is a sales pitch! Securing our top candidates is a competitive process, so make an awesome first impression by giving them relevant and targeted information.
Your organisation profile is visible to candidates and to other employers who are registered for SoT. (And when yours is live, you can check out the other employer profiles, too!)

Just like a standard job listing, we ask for a job title and job description. You have the option to put the wage or salary information on the listing. We also ask you to complete a skills matrix, to let candidates know what technical skills are required (or desirable) for each role. If there are particular requirements for the job (for example, Callaghan Innovation grants have specific requirements for interns), PLEASE include this in the job listing.

SoT’s “marketplace” system means candidates can find your roles and “apply”. There is no obligation to respond to all applications, our system sorts that out for you.
We do encourage you to provide feedback to unsuccessful candidates after an interview, as it is hugely useful for them to know where they can improve.
-
Yes! For summer internships, we encourage you to communicate with candidates after Meet & Greet, but you’ll have access to their contact information on their profiles. For roles during the year, communicate with the candidates whenever - the recruitment timeline is up to you!
Candidates do not have access to your contact information, you need to contact them if you want to arrange a job interview or technical test.
-
We do our best to keep candidates in the programme, but if their plans change and are no longer available for roles, they will disappear. We encourage you to communicate with your preferred candidates so they know they’re in the running, and don’t leap at an off-platform offer from an employer outside of SoT.
-
Sure thing! Just please don’t make it too long, or complicated. Most of our candidates are still studying, so try to keep it achievable.
-
Usually mid-November to mid-February, but the exact dates & hours are to be agreed between the employer and the employee. Some students finish exams earlier than mid-November, some tertiary courses don’t finish until mid-December. If you have particular requirements for work over summer, please talk to your candidate about availability during the final stages of the interview process.
We ask candidates to be available full time, Monday-Friday, for 400 hours between November and March.
-
For summer internships, we have a staged process. This is currently being reviewed by our team, so stay tuned for updates.
For short term contracts & graduate roles, there are no timelines to stick to - offer whenever you’re ready!
Terms & Conditions
As a Summer of Tech employer, I agree to abide by the following terms & conditions:
I acknowledge that “SoT Employer” includes all individuals registering to hire candidates on behalf of an organisation, as part of any Summer of Tech programme.
I have read the pricing information and acknowledge that we must pay a placement fee for any SoT candidates hired after connecting through SoT.
I will search and connect with SoT candidates with genuine intent to recruit them for paid, mentored, entry-level jobs.
I will list roles on the SoT web platform before I reach out to any candidates, so that candidates have context and expectations before we connect.
I will track applications via the SoT web platform. If I must include a link to an external application process, I will implement a “referred by Summer of Tech” tracking system, so that we acknowledge SoT as the source of the referral.
I will communicate clearly with applicants and shortlisted candidates, so they know their status and timelines in our recruitment process.
I will follow SoT’s rules for making summer internship job offers during September recruitment season. All summer internship offers and acceptances of employment will be made via the SoT web platform. Any offers made outside of the SoT platform will be confirmed with SoT within 24 hours of acceptance.
I understand the SoT online Offer process is expected to be a binding employment offer, and it will be followed up with a formal contract within 1 week of acceptance.
As a SoT Employer, our organisation will comply with NZ employment legislation, and manage our employees in line with NZRise’s guidance on internships.
There will be an employment agreement in place for all SoT candidates hired, and they will be paid an hourly wage of at least NZ Living Wage.
For each candidate hired, my organisation will provide a dedicated mentor, a go-to person for issues and questions that arise during the internship.
I agree to follow the Code of Conduct for all SoT events & activities.
I acknowledge that Summer of Tech may video or photograph participants at events, and that my attendance may be documented and shared via online media channels (including the SoT website, social media pages, and Youtube). As such, I hereby agree to relinquish any reasonable expectation of privacy and understand that the use of my image does not violate any right of privacy, law, regulation or agreement. Moreover, I hereby grant permission to Summer of Tech to use, or authorise others to use, any photograph, motion picture, image, recording, or any other record of my participation in activities during the Summer of Tech programme.
